Centennial State, birthplace of the cheeseburger

Cheeseburger

It’s “not zucchini, fettuccine or bulgur wheat but a big warm bun and a huge hunk of meat,” sang Jimmy Buffett. Somewhere along the line, somebody added cheese. No one really knows who was the first to do it.

But we do know it was a Colorado resident who gave the cheeseburger its name. Jimmy would be proud.

The name came from Louis Ballast, who owned Denver’s Humpty Dumpty Drive-In back in the 1930s. Although he never got a patent for slapping a cheese slice onto a burger, he was awarded a trademark on the “cheeseburger” name in 1935.
