Proudly accepting its nickname of “the activists’ coffee shop,” Denver’s Whittier Café is the city’s only African espresso bar. Acknowledging coffee’s roots as having been discovered in Africa, the café’s coffees all come from countries in Africa.
Every Sunday, the café asks its community to join its team in a traditional East African coffee ceremony, in which the coffee is brewed in a clay pot “jebena.” In addition to coffee, the espresso bar also offers beer and wine from African countries. Whittier Café goes beyond its coffee to provide support to its community through social justice efforts and education causes.
