If you’ve ever driven up I-70, there’s no doubt you’ve seen signs for Black Hawk.
Formed in 1859 following a gold strike in the ravine Gregory’s Gulch, the “City of Mills” has a rich history. Black Hawk was incorporated in 1864 as one of Colorado’s first cities and shortly thereafter became the milling center for the area’s gold ore.
By 1872, a railroad link was built to expedite transfer of refined gold. Thanks to legislation allowing limited stakes gaming in 1991, Black Hawk now thrives as a gambling destination with many historic buildings preserved and renovated to accommodate casinos.
