Gentrification Spurs Debate

by

Denver is one of the country’s fastest growing cities — cranes punctuate the skyline. Historic neighborhoods are becoming hopping new hubs. And neighborhood renovation can bring new jobs and lower crime rates. But progress often comes with a downside. Sometimes, “in with the new” becomes “out with the old.”

Gentrification is frequently termed a war on the poor, as resulting price inflation and higher rent often displace low-income residents. Cities undergoing gentrifiation must consider affordable housing, which can become a problem.

In Denver, the debate is raging. But thoughtful and carefully planned growth can lead to healthy, mixed-income communities.
