Library patrons: Say goodbye to overdue fines

by
library fines

In the past few years, libraries across the country have called their fines into question. Last year, the Salt Lake City Public Library eliminated overdue fines for patrons. Columbus Metropolitan Library did the same thing.

On Jan. 1, 2019, Denver Public Library will join the growing list of fine-free libraries. The reason? Public libraries are about access, and fines often serve as barriers for people who can’t afford them.

Late returns will still have consequences. Patrons can have their access restricted if an item is 14 days overdue. Still, staff members hope the removal of fines will increase visits.
