Stress impacts everybody, even dairy cows. Colorado doesn’t have the biggest herds of dairy cattle, nor the most milk production. They do, however, produce the most milk per cow, putting them ahead of milk-producing states like Idaho and Wisconsin.
It’s tender loving care that appears to be making the difference. In northeastern Colorado, there is an effort to create a low-stress environment based on data that is gaining interest. How cattle are handled and freedom of movement could play a part in their superior milk production. Not a proven fact, but happy cows producing more milk makes sense.
