Economic Impact of Agriculture in Colorado

by Michael Polzella

Agriculture is one of the leading industries in Colorado. Nearly half of Colorado’s 66 million acres are farms and ranches. Colorado’s agriculture contributes $41 billion to the state’s economy and employs nearly 173,000 people.

State farmers and ranchers contribute to feeding the world’s population, exporting more than $1.8 billion in products. Canada, Mexico, Japan, Korea and China receive the largest share of Colorado food.

According to the 2017 Colorado Business Economic Outlook, agriculture may have a tough year ahead, with prices for major crops in decline. However, producers continue to provide the state with food supply and jobs.
