The ‘Queen Bee’ Herself

by

During the late 19th century, feminist Caroline Churchill arrived in Denver to find what she called “a good atmosphere for weak lungs.” It was here she began to make her bold vision of starting her own newspaper a reality.

She began writing, editing and traveling across the country to promote her work in the appropriately named newspaper, The Queen Bee, known as the nation’s first emancipation newspaper.

She tackled bold topics such as women’s suffrage, temperance and religion as she built her newspaper to reach an audience of 2,500, “the highest weekly rate from Kansas City to San Francisco.”
