Students’ vision for The Gathering Place now serving hundreds daily

In 1986, two University of Denver graduate students had a vision to help women and children facing homelessness. Toni Schmid and Kathy Carfrae interned at shelters where they watched women leave each morning, left to face the streets with no support.

With a $6,000 donation, they started The Gathering Place, helping 25-35 women by providing meals, warmth and protection daily. That single-room endeavor has expanded to a 28,000-square-foot facility serving over 270 women and children each day.

They also meet additional needs including physical and mental health programs, educational programs and trauma-informed care. All services are provided free of charge.
