Pikes Peak’s namesake explorer never actually made it to the top

Explorer Zebulon Pike led an expedition to find the headwaters of the Arkansas and Red rivers in 1806, which led to his team being the first Americans to explore the wilderness of Colorado.

In November, Pike’s team sighted and tried to climb the summit of a peak that would later be known as Pikes Peak. As they tried to make their ascent, they ended up going almost two days without food and had to climb back down in the waist-deep snow.

The team continued on to New Mexico, where they were captured by Spanish officials and charged with illegal entry.
